The goodest boy: Police pay tribute to retiring police dog

Must read

Canterbury police have posted a touching tribute to a retiring police dog.

In a post to social media, police said after seven years’ service, including five years with the AOS (Armed Offenders Squad), Police patrol dog Usain is hanging up his harness.

“Usain’s unmatched drive and determination served him well throughout his career and helped him and his handler through a few close calls, including one time when an offender tried to drown him in a river.”

Police said Usain was retiring happily to the home of his current handler and his family.

“Thank you for your service Usain and we wish you a happy retirement”

The post attracted comments from the public, also praising Usain for his service.

“Happy retirement, Usain, with your pawlice whanau. Thank you for your service!” said one.

“Usain I’m sure you will be missed immensely by everyone on the force, but knowing you’re in a wonderful home and well looked after. Happy retirement, you deserve it.”

“Happy retirement. Time to put the paws up and relax” while another summed up the sentiment by saying “The Goodest Boy! Congrats champ”

Meanwhile six new patrol dog teams are joining police districts across the country after graduating from the Police Dog Training Centre at Trentham last month.

Commissioner of Police Richard Chambers highlighted the importance of the police dogs, when  congratulating the new recruits.

“All our patrol dog teams play a crucial role in frontline policing, deploying to some of the most dynamic and challenging situations. We couldn’t police the way we do without them.” he said.

“That’s why I’m thrilled to see six newly trained dog teams graduate today. They will be welcomed into Eastern, Central, Waikato, Wellington, and Auckland police districts very soon.”
